Bachelor's Degree Examination for Self-Education (BDES) is a system to test self-taught applicants on whether they are
qualified to receive a bachelor's degree. Those who pass the final step are conferred the bachelor's degree by the name of the Minister of Education.

There are 4 exams for obtaining a bachelor's degree. Each exam is once in a year.

1st exam Qualifying Examination for Liberal Arts
2nd exam Qualifying Examination for Major-Basic
3rd exam Qualifying Examination for Major-Advanced
Final exam Comprehensive Examination

In the following cases, applicants are exempt from the first three examinations:

  • An applicant who has finished freshman year of college or university is exempt from the Qualifying Examination for
    Liberal-Arts.
  • An applicant who has finished sophomore year of college or university in the same major field is exempt from
    the Qualifying Examinations for Liberal-Arts and Major-Basics.
  • An applicant who has finished junior year of college or university in the same major field is exempt from the Qualifying
    Examinations for Liveral-Arts, Major-Basic and Major-Advanced.
  • An applicant who has passed a qualifying examination administered by the government and has obtained its certificate of license is exempt from the examination related to it.
  • An applicant who has completed a course by attending a lecture at lifelong education institutions affiliated with colleges or universities designated by the National Institute for Lifelong Education is exempt from the examination related to it.
  • Anyone who has acquired credits through the Academic Credit Bank System is exempt from the Qualifying Examinations for Liberal-Arts, Major-Basic and Major-Advanced according to their obtained credits.

     

    If an applicant is exempt from a subject, it is indicated with an "E", and if he or she is exempt from a course, e.g., Liberal-Arts, it is indicated with an "Exemption".

    All the applicants are required to take the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination, which is the final step for attaining the bachelor's degree.
